Home – Images

This post is simply focused on the images I took and chose, along with a brief description of each and a look at some of the images I took with the same idea for the project in mind, that I chose to reject.
For the full project description and research, please look at the Home – Description Post.

I wanted the project to start with a minimalist take on the idea, with it’s majority focus being just the road. This was to provide the viewer with a clear idea of what the project will be centered around.
I liked the form of the road itself, causing the viewers attention to be dragged along to an abrupt stop where the continued path is left ambiguous. The collaborative colours seen in the image were also very  pleasing to look at and gave off this warm radiant feeling that I liked.

The second image I chose to saturate quite heavily. Overall it gave it this possibly vintage colour photograph like look that I felt helped to transpire the thought of looking through old family photo albums. The plants themselves provide this connection to the rural aspect of my home which I loved.

Although the road itself is a relatively secondary part of this image. I felt that the objects surrounding it should have a good amount of focus placed on them to get across the traditional aspect of my home/ the Isle of Man. The street-light/ lamp and windows also help to provide the viewer with an idea on how big the road is, as in other images where I had kept the road central, it appeared to be huge.

These two images both had the brightness taken down along with the saturation. This was partly because I wanted the transition to the last image to not be so abrupt and because I felt they suited the dramatic style it gave them. Once again the surroundings play a much bigger role in these pictures, however I do feel they helped to condense the roads down in size and gave them this cramped like feeling. The walls do provide stubborn and relatively bland (expect for their textures) blockades to keep the surroundings hidden and out of the viewers thought, which does help to draw the viewer again to the roads.

I took the warmth away from this image and lowered the brightness more so than the others. This was because I felt it provided a strong connotation towards the move I have made to Lincoln. This is because it was quite a scary choice for me to make in my decision to move to university and I wanted this to come across in the final image. I liked how the buildings and landscape becomes more developed as the viewer looks further into the distance, with such things as the Odeon sign itself being a great way to push across the thought I had of everything being big and westernised in relation to what I am used to. I also kept the brightness high in the distance to show the good and new home that awaited at the end of the journey.

Rejected Images

These images are ones I attempted at night in estates around the city. I wanted these to have this much more urban vibe to them than the others as a representation of the local towns on the Isle of Man. Unfortunately I felt the lighting was just too low in them and couldn’t get the settings right to give me the pictures I really wanted. This is why I chose to reject them and not include them as pieces within the project. I did really like the effect the street lamps provided in these pictures and it was a real shame that they didn’t come out looking as great as I had anticipated.
